Plastic molds basic structure

Plastic molds structure main consist of molding injection system, cooling system, ejector system, return system, hydraulic system, heating system, hot runner system, etc. In other words, plastic main parts are mould base, mould core, mould cavity, ejector parts and some spare parts. Such as, fixed clamp plate, moving clamp plate, support plate, ejector pin, stripper , location ring , nozzle, spare block , ejector plate, sprue bush , stop pin , etc.

Plastic molds production progress

When customer places their order in our company, we will have more than 15 employees working on this project. Sales engineer and project manager in charge of the project arrangement and checking the progress.

The first step is product drawing. The sample from customer will measured in our inspection center by three coordinate machines. Product designer design the drawing according to the sample and customer’s special requirement.

As soon as the product drawing confirmed by customer, we start the second step-- mould design. Mould designer will analysis the mold structure, such like point the position of most reasonable parting line, the location and configuration of water channel, etc.

When they finish the mould design, we will have a new mould meeting, and all the related engineers will attend the meeting. Sales engineer convey customer’s requirement on the mould to all of them, then we discuss the important point of this project. After the mould design checked by our chief engineers, and confirmed by the customer, we start the third step.

We buy the mould steel from the company who supply local steel and import steel. The mainly steel used for mould cavity and mould core is S136, DIN1.2311, DIN1.2738, 718H, DIN1.2344, H13, P20, etc. Different steel is used to different mould part. After received the steel, is CNC milling rough machining, heating treatment, EDM, wire cutting, turning-lathe, grinding, deep hole drilling, carving, fly-cutter, polishing, mould testing, texture, and mould assembling.

The last step is mould precision inspection. We have own inspection center in our company to make sure every part of the mould is qualified.

What is a qualified plastic molds?

As far as I know, a qualified plastic mold should be high precision, qualified mould should have long mould life under your correct maintain and operation. Simple mould structure is always better to the mould life. A good plastic is that can be working in long term period and do not need any big modification.

Gas assistant molding system

Gas assistant molding is a kind of new technology which brings the high pressure air into plastic molding parts to let the plastic product with hollow section. Compare to traditional plastic injection moulds molding, it can reduce the weight of the product; realize thick wall and thin wall at the same time. The product surface will be more beautiful than traditional mould, without shrink mark, deformation and other molding defects. RHCM (Rapid Heat Cycle Molding)

It is a kind of high speed and high temperature molding technology. Put some Glass Fiber into plastic raw material to get the plastic product with high hardness and reflective surface. RHCM can remove the molding defects like melt line and flow mark which will appear in traditional plastic molding.

RHCM use high steam to make the mould cavity surface to reach the plastic raw material distortion temperature. Mould with high temperature ensures the good flow of plastic raw material; it makes the material fast flow and filled. It can avoid material become solider. This kind technology realizes no cooling molding and product with high glossy appearance without molding defects like deformation, melt line, flow mark, sliver line. This kind of mould with short cycle time, reduce around 70% compare to traditional molding.

RHCM mould have its advantage, it also have some disadvantages

·         Mould steel will be easy crack - As there are a rapid transfer from high temperature to low temperature, so RHCM mould have high demands on mould steel, it must have good resistance to cold and hot fatigue. Once the steel is not good, it will be appearing very series problem, mould steel will be crack and it appears frequency.
·         Oil stain - As the mould temperature will be exceeding 130 , it will lead to liquid oil leakage; it will make a mark on product. This problem only can be solved by using slide lubrication.
·         Gate area will appear white mark - As RHCM molding material also with GF, GF has high hardness, it impacts gate area time by time, so after some time using, the mould will have the mark that lead to product become white on this area.

Even though, RHCM technology is not wisely used on market, but it will be a main technology in future as more and more customer require for high quality product, especially for outer parts. Nowadays, RHCM mould is mainly used in outer part product, like TV case and some automotive parts.

The main factors need to be considered in making of good quality PET mould

PET mould has a long history on the world; there are several famous companies which have rich experience of PET preform mould and lead the PET preform mould industry, like Husky from Canada, Hasco from German…PET preform mould has become with more and more cavities to reach high production efficiency. Even Chinese preform mould start later than European countries, it has a rapid development in last few decades.
 
To achieve high quality PET moulds, Chinese PET preform mould makers do a lot of research and development. To make good quality PET preform mould, mould life, mould cycle time, mould injection stability are the main factors need to be considered.

How to make PET mould with long mould life?

First, Mould steel is one of the main factors of mould life. Preform mould steel must be durable with high hardness around HRC 48-52 to ensure the mould won’t be wear too much during production. And the mould steel must stainless and with good polish ability to ensure high transparent of PET preform. Generally, good Chinese mould maker will use Sweden Assab mould steel S136 to make mould core and cavity inserts. As for the mould base, it is important as well to ensure long mould life. LKM mould base is one of the famous standard mould bases, mould maker can use LKM mould base, some mould maker make the mould base them, to ensure the quality, and the mould base steel should no bad than P20.

Second, good mould design is another important factor to ensure long mould life.

Mould structure should be as simple as possible to make the mould easy running and easy to do maintenance. Good mould structure should with less part which will be damaged easily. As to PET mould, good cooling system is one of the most important factors to ensure long mould life and reach high quantity output. The water channel should with bigger diameter to let more water in and the water should go to cooling as much as surface near to the molding surface.

Third, hot runner system is a very important part to multi cavities PET mould molding.

Hot runner system is the main part which ensures the mold injection balance and stable. PET preform mould generally adapt valve gate, there are many heating parts is easily broken, many customers will buy many heating parts as spare parts. There are several world famous hot runner brands, like Husco hot runner, Husky hot runner, Synventive Hot runner, Yudo hot runner… of course, there are many Chinese hot runner brand developed, for example, Anole Hot runner, it is a branch company of Sino Holdings Group, Sino Package mould make preform mould with Anole Hot runner, it success to make the preform mould with 72 cavities. Now we have design preform mould with 96 cav and 128 cav, in near future, I think it will be successful to make into production.

After finish PET mould R&D, how to realize the mould, mould tooling is the important stage. Before, Chinese PET preform mould maker have good design, but their tooling facility cannot ensure the mould quality, so even they have good design, they cannot reach a high quality mould. Now in China, there is more and more advance and precision tooling equipments, many factories are able to buy world famous tooling equipments and the tooling tolerance can be controlled within 0.01 to 0.05mm, so Chinese PET moulds are improved day by day.
